Will banking jobs in London be created following Barclays'' Scots recruitment?

Barclays has revealed that it is set to create new jobs in Glasgow.

While it is as yet unknown if these recruitment plans are the start of a UK-wide drive, the news could be viewed as positive for those hoping the financial services provider will go on to create new banking jobs in London.

Scottish first minister Alex Salmond has announced that Barclays plans to create 600 posts in Glasgow, due to the support it has received from a multi-million pound grant of Regional Selective Assistance funding from Scottish Enterprise.

Conditions of this grant include the banking group creating a number of new jobs over the forthcoming years, which could see it eventually employing 2,000 people in Scotland.

Ian Axe, head of operations at Barclays Capital and Barclays Wealth, said: "This example of collaboration between the investment banking and wealth management divisions at Barclays is an exciting development for clients, staff and potential employees in Glasgow and across Scotland."

In related news, Barclays group chief executive John Varley is set to step down and will be replaced by Robert E Diamond Jr.
